Threshold Consultants offer workshops and training programs based on community needs we have seen over the decades.
Many physicians are challenged daily in caring for patients on the autism spectrum. Physicians frequently called Threshold in the USA and referred their patients to our behavioral educators for guidance in implementing care plans. When admitting patients, physicians do not have time to review behavior improvement plans, setting events, antecedent triggers, and consequence management. Our workshops introduce physicians to applied behavior analysis and cut through the boring minutia. We provide the information physicians need to be more effective in their care plans for special needs patients. Subjects include behavior de-escalation techniques and return to normal function. A one-day workshop offers ABA vocabulary and the essentials of behavior management. Intermediate and Advanced workshops are available for physicians working with select populations (e.g., pediatricians, neurologists, and family medicine).
Teachers and educators are seeing increased numbers of children on the spectrum. Threshold's teacher training programs have been used for years at our Threshold Academy. Teacher workshops include ways to implement education improvement plans, how to recognize behavior escalation, and more importantly, how to de-escalate the situation.
Workshops typically last three to five days and include all materials necessary to gain skills and improve client outcomes.
Family member workshops are offered to parents at three levels. Level one training is an introduction to applied behavior, education improvement plans, and the functions of behavior analysts and trainers. In addition, we introduce parents and siblings to safety techniques and de-escalation procedures. Level Two training continues to be a learning experience and managing preteens approaching puberty. Level three training can be repeated as often as parents need to refresh their skills and safety procedures.
After more than 50 years of research on the causes of autism, we know that it is not caused by malnutrition or food-related challenges. As a nutritionist, Ing. Eva Kocurkova, MS, knows there is a connection between autism and food. Research suggests that food-related challenges have a significant impact on many kids with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD).
No. It is not blood. That was not what I was thinking when, as a 19-year-old, I walked into the bathroom and saw Ben covered with red paint. It made me question whether I was prepared to rescue Ben or any other child if I found him or her covered in their blood. I received a call one evening to return to the Threshold campus immediately. I walked into the bathroom and found my staff trying to manage the bleeding from Michael's head. Head wounds bleed profusely. When an artery is torn, it bleeds more aggressively. Michael was 17 years old and had been in the shower. He was naked, wet, and covered in blood. Our first task was to find the bleeding and stop it. Trying to do that on a squirming, naked, wet, screaming resident was a challenge. We were successful, and things returned to normal. Emergencies happen. Whether they are life-threatening or not is another concern. Our night staff consisted of two Russian physicians working as behavior trainers, one trauma nurse with more than 30 years of emergency training, and a former Green Beret Army medic. The bleeding artery was found, pressure was applied, and the situation was easily controlled. You will unlikely find this combination of healthcare professionals in the average home.
What can you do before emergency help arrives? Many families are left to manage these home emergencies on their own. Threshold and our colleagues are highly qualified to teach you how to manage injuries until definitive help arrives.
